Garden 2008

The garden gave us a lot of goodies this summer but it took a little work. We took turns watching the girls so the other person could plant, weed, pick, or do any of the other odd jobs that needed to be done. Every Wednesday and Saturday we took our goodies the the Monroe Farmer's Market. It's a relatively small market but its been a good place for us to start. Being our second year, we had some return customers and many new ones. Our big sellers are raspberries, tomatoes, beans, sweet corn, and squash. There are crops that we need to work on, like greens - they look great but picking them and getting them to market without wilting is a challenge. We did not take cut flowers to the market this summer but grew them to attract pollinators. Skye became a very good raspberry picker but she and the dogs can really do a number on the other plants - sometimes they just need to be stepped or layed on. We aren't organic yet but we follow those lines of growing.

Our new addition to this family venture were 50 chickens. They were laying by June and we have been eating the eggs and selling to neighbors since then. We have had to put most of the roosters on the butcher block and they don't taste half bad either. We constructed, what Katy likes to refer to as the chicken truck. It was a movable pen with a mini-coop in it. We refer to them as the girls and are thinking of expanding our numbers in the spring.

Fabulous! My dad wants to know what kind of chickens you have. He is sure there are Rhode Island Reds and Leghorns in the mix. He can tell from the eggs you gave them which he and my mom really appreciated! I'm so glad you started a blog! - Jenny

I'm glad you started a blog too Katy and Marc, since it is physically impossible for me to correspond with anyone unless its online.

I'm glad to see you are happy and the kids are healthy, there's not much more in life!

The garden looks good too. do you have a tractor? if not, when are you getting one?

Hi Katy and Family!
So fun to get your holiday card and even more fun to be able to track you online! It should be noted the previous comment from "Karen" was actually from Joe.

Glad all is well! Your girls are gorgeous!
